Film buffs may remember the tangled tale of competing Robin Hood projects in 1991. Kevin Costner, riding high from his Oscar wins for Dances with Wolves, had his pick of projects at the time, and he juggled his interest in parallel Hood films that were under development at different studios. Costner chose Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, of course, directed by his friend Kevin Reynolds, while the other production (the one described here), attached to veteran British director John Irvin (The Dogs of War), ended up on cable television with another Yank, Patrick Bergin, in the lead. Comparisons were inevitable, even though the two films were very different from one another. A little harder edged and more surprising than Reynolds’s work, the Irvin-Bergin movie made all that medieval heroism seem more an effort of the heart than previous versions. Roughing things up a bit is Uma Thurman as a bratty Maid Marion, not quite the traditional damsel in distress of yesteryear. There are no surprises in the familiar scenes of male bonding, dangerous rescus, injury and death, and the supportive concern of Jack’s wife (Jacinda Barrett), but by focusing on the simple integrity of Jack’s personal and professional commitment, the movie gives Phoenix a showcase for unselfish virtu, while John Travolta provides dignified support as Jack’s mentor and devoted firehouse captain. Ladder 49 is routine in most respects, but it’s a much-deserved valentine to working-class heroes. –Jeff Shannon

Stunning computer-generated special effects are the main selling point of Dragon Wars: D-War, a Korean-made fantasy about ancient monsters wreaking havoc in modern Los Angeles. The complex plot, based on legend, pits an evil serpent and its demonic army against a young woman (Amanda Brooks) who is the reincarnation of a young woman imbud with the heaven-sent power to transform the creature into an all-powerful dragon. Jason Behr (The Grudge) is the reporter who discovers that he too is a reincarnated warrior bound to prevent Brooks and her power from falling into the wrong hands. The elaborate premise isn’t helped by the script, which delivers absurd dialogu and situations with child-like naivete; thankfully, the presence of Robert Forster (as another reincarnated hero) and solid actors like Elizabeth Pena, The Office’s Craig Robinson, and Chris Mulkey, help smooth over the frequnt moments of unintentional humor. But this won’t matter much to fantasy fans and (especially) younger viewers, who will tune in for the film’s riot of special effects; director Shim Hyung-rae and his talented team offer scene after scene of exceptional CGI creations, most notably a aerial dogfight between helicopters and winged lizards in the skies above downtown L.A., and a climactic battle which makes good on the title’s promise. The DVD includes a making-of featurette which outlines Shim’s four-year struggle to complete the project, as well as storyboard galleries and an animatics display. – Paul Gaita
